Award-winning designer/illustrator unveils Catype

Rochester, NY, February 20, 2006— Inspired by his recently acquired cat, Buster, award-winning designer/illustrator Frank Argento, brings his feline’s playful behaviors to life through a myriad of distinctive illustrations, under the brand name Catype. Pulling from a range of behaviors, Argento named each cat according to personality, and then using only upper and lower case and italic letters; he shaped each character to reflect the essence of the word. Twelve cats were created on Argento’s computer. Collectively, they comprise the Catype family.

“Other artists have used letters to create illustrations,” said Argento. “I used them to create a family of cat personalities.” There is “Agile,” the jumping, frolicking, happy-go-lucky feline, “Alert,” the brainy aristocrat – intelligent and mannerly and “Vulnerable” the carefree optimist – oblivious to etiquette.

According to the Zandl Group, annual spending on pets doubled in the past 10 years to $37 billion, spurring the growth of products and services that would have been inconceivable even 20 years ago. Argento sees significant potential in merchandising the Catype brand. “There is a huge demand for cat-related products that will delight parents, children, grandparents and cat fanciers of all ages alike.”

In addition to licensing the Catype characters for calendars, posters, postcards and posters, Argento has plans for a book, animated shorts and more licensing.
